In English, students are involved in critical analysis of a wide range of genres, styles and techniques. They participate in comprehending and composing a range of literature, media and everyday texts. They explore and engage with fictional, factual, non-print and multimedia texts from different cultural perspectives and use them to think creatively and critically about themselves, their world and the wider community. All students are encouraged to extend their proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writing in a variety of contexts and situations.

Students for whom English is a second language (EAL) or who have special language needs, will be catered for through mainstream English lessons.

All students in Years 8 – 11 undertake a compulsory full year study of English, and the vast majority of students who continue into Year 12, have the choice to continue studying English.

• It is compulsory for students to undertake a whole of English from years 8 to 11.
• In Years 8 and 9, all classes are of mixed ability.
• Year 8 and 9 students study a whole year of English.
• Year 10 students study English or Literary Studies for an entire year.
• Year 11 students study either Literary Studies, English, or Essential English for a whole year.
• One of the requirements for students to achieve their SACE is gaining at least a ‘C’ grade for two semesters of Year 11 English.
• Year 12 students study English Studies or English Communications.

Students are actively encouraged to enter local, state and national writing competitions; the Australian Schools’ English and Writing Competitions, Eisteddfod Debating, Rostrum and public speaking competitions. Each year, students participate in ‘Writers’ Week,’ where students focus on various forms of literacy and language. The workshops include: working with writing professionals, quizzes, writing competitions, public speaking competitions and other language-rich activities.
